Lorraine, our region
Geography :
The Lorraine is our region. It's located in the north-east of France. There are 2 347 000 inhabitants. The most populated cities are Metz and Nancy. The region is divided in 4 departements ("counties"): Moselle, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse and Vosges.
The Lorraine is near Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium.
In the Vosges, there are old mountains where we can sky, ride a bike and hike.
History :
From 1871 to 1918, Moselle was German because of the war French-Prussian. After the "traité de Versailles" (World War I), we were French again. That's why a lot of old person still speak fluently a German dialect.
There were iron-ore and coal mines 100 years ago. But they were closed because they become too expensive and too dangerous.
Lorraine are hurt by world wars. There are a lot of bunkers, and an important battle (World War I) took place in Verdun.
